Match Report
Saints have only won once in the last 9 games, but still managed to keep Chelsea at bay until the defences were breached by Torres. Then the floodgates opened.
Oscar had already hit the post before Torres 60th minute header. We only had to wait a further eleven minutes before Willian scored the second and by this time it was frankly, one way traffic.
Until then Saints had occasionally forced Chelsea's defence into some desperate work to ensure they remained on level terms.
Ashley Cole, twice had to show his experience with crucial interceptions, while it took two defenders to stop Adam Lallana after he had been set up by Calum Chambers.
Luke Shaw went off injured at half-time and was replaced by Nathaniel Clyne, so we had two right backs on the pitch, although it didn't really affect the outcome.
One potential game changing moment was when Oscar, who had come on for Mata in the 53rd minute, dived as he rounded Davis, when it looked easier to score. Martin Atkinson wasted no time in booking the Chelsea player.
Torres goal was the signal for Pocchetino to bring on Rickie Lambert and he almost made an instant impact, taking advantage of confusion in Chelsea's defence but unfortunately only headed straight at Petr Cech.
It was an ultimately disappointing and disjointed game from Saints point of view, but the thing that disappointed me the most were the hoards of early leavers, which prompted the Chelsea fans in the away section to politely enquire if they were off to the New Years Day sales.
