    |Thankfully we don't have to face Liverpool again this season! Saints did run them close for the first 45 minutes and indeed should have had a penalty, which somehow was turned down by referee Kevin Friend and then the decision was confirmed by VAR. Still, no complaints with the result really, as this is by far the best Liverpool side that I have seen for many a year.

With Armstrong injured and potentially out for a couple of weeks and Cédric off to Arsenal on loan until his contract runs out, there were a couple of issues to sort out. McCarthy returned in goal, after Gunn's outing in the FACup, JWP went to right back and Romeu went into midfield. Armstrong's replacement was Djenepo and Long returned in place of Obafemi to partner Danny Ings in attack.

A difficult, but not unexpected afternoon for the Southampton manager, but no longer looking like he has an appointment with the hangman
